How do I measure AI visibility?

You measure AI visibility by repeatedly asking each AI engine the real questions your buyers ask and recording whether it names you, in what position, and against which competitors.

The PingMyBrand team

You measure AI visibility the only way it can honestly be measured: by asking the AI engines the questions your buyers actually ask, repeatedly, and recording what they say. There's no dashboard inside ChatGPT that reports your "rank," and no analytics tool that captures a private AI chat. The measurement has to come from probing the engines directly.

The method

  1. Write your buyer questions. Not "is [your brand] good" — the real questions buyers type: "best [category] for [use case]," "alternatives to [competitor]," "[category] with [feature]." Twenty to twenty-five well-chosen questions cover most intent.
  2. Ask each engine, more than once. Run every question against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Repeat, because generated answers vary run to run — a single ask isn't a measurement.
  3. Record four things per answer: were you named; in what position relative to others; which competitors were named; and (where visible, e.g. Perplexity) which of your pages was cited.
  4. Score and trend it. Turn the mentions into a simple 0–100 visibility score per engine, and track it over time so you can tell whether changes you make actually move it.

Why a snapshot isn't enough

One scan tells you today's state. The value is in the trend: you change something on your site, re-probe, and see whether the mention appeared. That closed loop is what separates real GEO from guesswork.

Doing this by hand across four engines and dozens of questions, weekly, is impractical — which is exactly the job an AI visibility monitoring tool automates: it runs the probes, scores them, tracks the trend, and alerts you when a mention shifts.
