What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is whether — and how often — AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name your brand when someone asks them a buying question.
AI visibility is whether AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity — actually name your brand when a buyer asks them a question you'd want to win. It's the AI-answer equivalent of a search ranking, except there's no public results page to check. The answer is generated fresh, phrased in prose, and often names only two or three companies. You're either in that shortlist or you're not.
Concretely: a buyer types "best project management tool for a small agency" into ChatGPT. The reply names three products and explains why. If yours isn't one of them, you have an AI visibility problem for that question — regardless of where you rank on Google. The buyer may never open a search engine at all.
Why it's different from SEO
Classic SEO measures your position in a list of blue links a human then scans. AI visibility measures whether a machine chose to mention you at all inside a synthesized answer. There's no page 2 to be relegated to — there's inclusion or absence. And because the answer is generated, the same question can name different brands on different days, on different engines, and for slightly different phrasings.
How you actually measure it
You can't see it in Google Search Console or your analytics, because those tools only report on Google's own search surface — never on what a third-party assistant says in a private chat. The only reliable way is to ask the engines directly: put the real questions your buyers ask to each assistant, repeatedly, and record whether your brand is named, in what position, and against which competitors. That repeated-probe measurement is exactly what an AI visibility monitoring tool does.
